Pilates is a gentle yet powerful form of exercise which improves muscle tone and function. It increases flexibility and joint mobility and allows the body to exercise without stressing the joints. Pilates is not an aerobic exercise regime but it becomes increasingly demanding. It is great for people of all ages and abilities. It encourages breathing, alignment, control and relaxation and it builds core strength through co-ordinated, flowing movements. Joseph Pilates, after whom the method is named, explored many fitness regimes, martial arts and athletic activities before designing his 34 classic exercises which provide a complete body workout. He called his method Controlology. He also designed machines or "gym equipment" to extend his exercises for dancers and athletes. His "Reformer" has been redesigned in modern materials making it portable. See the Allegro Reformer at Atelier Pilates. |
